Batteries

Just some thoughts about lithium ion batteries and battery waste:

While I think the state of cell phones currently is not so good and they obviously produce a lot of unnecessary waste both of the battery variety and otherwise, I also think they're actually only the tip of the iceberg because the battery waste that electric cars produce is exponentially higher, and of course they produce a great deal of other waste as well. For this reason and others I don't consider simply replacing regular cars with electric cars a sustainable or realistic response to the climate crisis.  Organizing society to improve the effectiveness of public transportation and making it so people don't need or want to travel as often are, in my mind, the only reasonable approaches to solve this problem.

Long work commutes are not sustainable.  While I imagine they will always be necessary to some degree, most current commutes are not based on some unavoidable physical constraint of society, but rather on the choices made in organizing that society that in turn impose this cruel framework on individuals.  It's too expensive to live near work.  You're not allowed to work remotely (Even if you want to!  Even if you can!).   It's hard to find work near where you live (and you can't or are unwilling to move).  You have to be willing to move constantly whether you want to or not so you can find  enough options for work.  And so on.  None of these situations are imposed by physics.  They are directly affected by the way our societies are organized.
