Andor

There's a conceptual trailer up now for the new Cassian Andor show here:

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this series.  I'm very curious where it's going to go.  I take issue with a lot of the way that the Rebellion is handled, but I do like to see things that explore rebellion characters.  That was one of the things I enjoyed about the Rebels show (despite my many complaints about that series, haha).  Whatever else happens, I also expect the Andor show to be somewhat tonally different from Rebels.

My expectations are heavily tempered, for a whole variety of reasons. With limited exceptions I've found so much of recent Star Wars to be glossy but empty; Cassian is one of the most intensely politically motivated characters in the whole canon and I don't for a second think that Disney is prepared to do justice to that; spy fiction in general doesn't tend to work well without thoughtful political grounding imo (and this was the problem I had with The Americans, with which I think this series shares a writer); and he's my favorite Star Wars character so a poorly done series would be especially frustrating.

All that said I would be delighted to be proved wrong, it would be right up my street if done well, and Diego Luna is a great actor. I think I'm just setting my expectations very low so I can't be disappointed, haha.

It's sort of an odd way of conceptualizing it since most spy fiction is set IRL as opposed to a sci-fi or fantasy universe, but in a lot of ways I think you can liken it to a worldbuilding issue. Geopolitics fundamentally shapes the plot of most spy fiction, so if authors can't write that insightfully the story ends up feeling very disconnected and clunky because it's not organically grounded in the setting.

For whatever reason I'm irrationally fond of Star Wars' ponchos so at least the costumes in the trailer were promising LOL. I avoid buying things from Disney too so who knows when I'll see it, but I'm definitely curious to see how it goes.
