I've been (re)watching Voyager lately. Not as fastidiously as I (re)watched Deep Space Nine, but I've watched a fair bit of it lately, and started watching the borg alliance arc where they first encounter Seven of Nine. I never actually saw this whole arc the first time I watched the show, so the arc itself is new to me even though I'm familiar with all the characters including Seven. I first saw Voyager when it first aired on television and while I know the characters and have seen sporadic pieces of it, there was a lot I didn't see the first time around.

Anyway, Voyager is such a fascinating show because it combines some of the worst of Trek with some of the best. Voyager has some of the most wild concepts (a holographic doctor, two crew members fusing together, the ship itself getting sick, Federation team-up with the borg) and can ask some really deep questions. It also has an episode that canonically turns two crew members into lizards. It infamously employed a guy who had long been exposed as having falsely claimed Native American ancestry to advise on Chakotay's character. It's impossible to predict from the beginning of an episode or arc whether it will turn out amazing or absolutely squander all its potential.

I'm really enjoying watching the borg team-up arc. There's a lot of meta I could write on the borg and what I think their depiction says about American anxieties and insecurities re: individualism, but also just on all the fascinating in-universe questions they bring up, such as whether the Vidians, Caretakers, and Ocompa could account for why they largely left the area of space Voyager first entered the Delta quadrant in alone. They're also unintentionally a fascinating examination of assimilation and assimilationism, which is a prominent aspect of American culture, though employed differently than in say, French culture. But that's more than I have time to go into now, and I can find it difficult to articulate my thoughts on these kinds of things even in the best of times. So I'll just leave it at that for now.

I feel like I have read and watched a much larger amount of things recommended by people I know on social media than I have people I know in person.  Part of it might be a matter of taste in that people I know in person may not share the same tastes that I do.  But as I've read and watched things that are quite outside of what I typically read or watch due to such recommendations or positive reviews on social media, I think there is more to it than that.

I think the multimedia and persistent format of social media makes it easier for people to show and discuss things that appeal to them about a given work, and also make it easier for me to absorb this information.

I love Cassian and Bix's ex-dating dynamic:

Bix Caleen: Not gonna lie, Cassian, you're hot, but I need a man to fix my meals for me and take out the trash.  Hot doesn't keep the house clean or pay the bills.  Which by the way, you are capable of doing a *negative* amount of.

Cassian Andor: Yeah, that's valid.

Usually I'd be more annoyed about the relative lack of alien characters in a Star Wars show than I am for Andor.  A lot of my favorite characters are some sort of alien.  But I also respect the limitations of putting an alien character front and center in a visual live-action  medium, especially when it comes to Disney shows.  A lot of energy has to be put into the look of a character like that or the result can detract from the show.

I certainly feel like this has been the case for pretty much every alien character that's had any significant live action role in a Star Wars show excepting baby Yoda (AKA Grogu).  And baby Yoda doesn't, ah, fit the mood of Andor as a show.  I really appreciate that Andor characters can use their faces to their full extent and that we don't have to deal with them wearing the typical 'bad cosplay' look I've seen for characters like the Grand Inquisitor in the Obi-Wan show.

And we still see alien characters!  They're just not particularly prominent in the narrative. Still, the ones we do see look appropriately Star Warsy without being so well known as characters or species that you're likely to feel they 'look wrong'.

Anyway, as one of the few Snoke fans, I'm going to have to say that I think Andy Serkis's Kino Loy is still a much better character than Snoke ever was.  Because story and authenticity will beat out even the biggest-budget special effects of a movie every time.

I think I'll have plenty of things to keep me occupied when I'm recovering after surgery, but I'm going to see if I can watch Babylon 5 and/or Farscape then.  I've never seen any of Babylon 5 and I only saw a few episodes of Farscape a long time ago, so I don't remember much about it but it seemed vaguely interesting.

As I've said before I don't pay for any subscription services but I do have other ways to see shows and have been watching both Discovery and Picard.

While my favorite of the two is Discovery, I've been enjoying Season 2 of Picard quite a lot.  Picard's first season just felt really slow for my taste, especially in the beginning.  I also didn't connect very well with a lot of the characters, as it often takes me a while to gain an interest in a new character, and there are quite a few major new characters.  But Season 2 is a lot zippier, and it has Q, who's one of my favorites.  It's also the most fun the borg have ever been.  Love the borg queen in this.  Well, there are two borg queens who appear, actually, but the first one we don't get much time with.  The second one we see a lot more of, and it's in a quite intriguing and unusual context.  Don't know how it's going to all end, but it's been really enjoyable so far.

Picard and Discovery are very different shows, and because of that, I feel they're quite complementary.  Discovery has a cast of entirely new characters taking center stage, and I really enjoy how they've developed the main cast, though their development of secondary characters is quite uneven.  Like there are secondary characters I absolutely love on the show, but there's also a number of the secondary crew members who I don't even recognize or remember names for.

Last night I finished watching Steven Universe Future.  I really enjoyed the series.  I also really like how the complete collection boxed set is designed like a scrapbook.

I think Steven Universe Future is such a nice epilogue for the series.  And it has enough episodes (2 disks of them) to really ask some interesting questions about what happens after the big fight is over.

Just finished watching Steven Universe: The Movie.  Spinel's scythe weapon really very strongly reminds me of a lightsaber.  It could totally work as a Sith lightsaber design.  It's also definitely 1000% cooler-looking than the taser-type weapons the gems use against each other.

One of my favorite episodes of Steven Universe is Lion 4: Alternate Ending. It's the one where he tries to figure out what his destiny is by 'decoding' his mother's videotape.Spoilers... )

This episode is about Pearl losing her phone...inside her own gem.  Bizarre and yet so incredibly relateable haha.

I am currently working on watching the rest of Steven Universe since I left off partway through when I was watching the series.  I really enjoy the whole 'musical sci-fi' aspect of this show a lot, not to mention all the different themes to think about.

Andor

There's a conceptual trailer up now for the new Cassian Andor show here:

I'll definitely be keeping an eye on this series.  I'm very curious where it's going to go.  I take issue with a lot of the way that the Rebellion is handled, but I do like to see things that explore rebellion characters.  That was one of the things I enjoyed about the Rebels show (despite my many complaints about that series, haha).  Whatever else happens, I also expect the Andor show to be somewhat tonally different from Rebels.

I finished watching Kingdom last night.  I'm not a big fan of the horror genre but something about this interested me. I thought this story had a decently well-structured plot.  I think what drew me to this initially was a personal desire to engage with stories about pandemic, though I also had to stop watching this for a while for that same reason (given that I also have a strong desire to see stories that *don't* remind me strongly of real world problems).

My favorite character was the physician Seo-bi and my favorite aspect of the plot was the medical mystery aspect.  I wasn't really expecting there to be a detailed background about 'how the undead works' in this story, but there was!  Seo-bi is the main character responsible for unravelling this mystery, and I really enjoy how her character develops.

This is a very tightly plotted story.  There aren't many episodes, only six per season, but a lot happens in a very short time period.  I think of each season as a movie in a sort of 'here's what would be possible with a movie if it could be made ridiculously long' kind of way.

The other thing I really liked about this show was the lavish scenery and costuming.  Obviously there's plenty of gross scenes too but it's contrasted with this beautiful imagery.  Maybe it's shallow but I just like seeing pretty clothes!  Pretty outdoors scenes!  Even the scary flesh-eating dead people get to be aesthetic sometimes!

There's a fair amount of humor interspersed in this story which helps to offset its more grim aspects.  There's also a character who's very clearly a comic relief character, and while I often find such characters annoying, I appreciate the implementation here, and he certainly helps to offset the otherwise deeply somber tone.  There's also a lot of action, unsurprisingly, and I'm a huge sucker for action scenes.

There's a lot of aspects of the narrative where I just accept that 'it's not that deep' haha but there's definitely something more to this story than its surface level features.  I just looked up the work this is based on, The Kingdom of the Gods, and found out that that's a manga.  Also interesting is that while the writer of the manga is Youn In-wan, the idea for the manga was provided by the writer of the television show, Kim Eun-hee.  I've long had an interest in tracing the relationships between an original work and its derivative works, so I might want to see if I can read the manga sometime.  Though for some reason I have difficulty getting into a lot of the comics/manga/graphic novels medium, I definitely have an interest in comparing and contrasting these two works.

Anyway, this was a fun if often grim series and I'd definitely say it was worth watching!

I finished watching Season 2 of Discovery, and while they are still powering starships with...magic mushrooms...I did overall enjoy this season a lot.  I don't bother to get subscriptions for shows like this, but I know someone who does, so I watched it with them.  I've also seen a number of Season 1 episodes, including the very beginning and the last few episodes.  I disliked Season 1 initially, but I thought it improved considerably towards the end.  Season 2 was really good with holding my attention, and I'm interested to see where they go with Season 3.  I felt the main plot points for S2 were resolved pretty well, even though they initially seemed rather nonsensical to me.  I've also enjoyed the new characters a lot, especially Michael Burnham, but in general I like a lot of the characters in this series.

Just finished rewatching the two Season 2 finale episodes.  These were pretty exciting, but then in then in the next season the show just really dropped the ball on a lot of the stuff set up here.  A list of arcs that I feel were mishandled:

*Maul--the plotline to nowhere!:(
*The Sith Holocron--who was speaking?! Whose holocron was this??!! Inquiring minds want to know!
*Ahsoka--am fine with the ultimate outcome, but deeply annoyed by the unnecessarily convoluted path to that destination; I admit a certain bias against this kind of plotline, of course...
*Ezra--because he should have had more interactions with Maul!

Which brings me to my last point:
*Maul--aaarrrgghhhh...just give me....Maul redemption arc...giiiiiive...

Anyway, it was interesting to rewatch this thinking about what I would change if I were to do a fanfic AU for this.  Which I would love to do, but I don't have enough of a direction yet (though I have some ideas).  I feel like I want to make progress on my current longfic though, because if I did this, it would definitely end up being a longer story.

Sometime I want to catch up with Steven Universe. I think the last show I watched was in season 3? It's been a while. This is one of the few newer cartoons I've watched. I didn't even watch that many cartoons as a child and there were only two or three I really cared about. It's because I seem to have some kind of selective misophonia with television so I try to avoid things that trigger that response. At least I know what I have to avoid--it's not random. But it means I can't watch a lot of TV.

Anyway, I think it's cool to see new sci-fi being made, which is a big part of the appeal of the show for me. Sci-fi is one of my major genres of interest, the other being fantasy.
