Today I finished The Dark Forest, the sequel to the Three-Body Problem.  This is a much grimmer series than I'm usually willing to read.  Which is not to say that it's all doom and gloom...but there *is* a lot of doom and gloom.  It's very much intended to be a warning.

Was not able to post on Pillowfort because it seems to currently be giving a weird error message if I try.

Weird.

I really enjoyed this novel.  I absolutely sped through it.  It's also a really scary story because even if one ignores the terrifying weird sci-fi stuff (and I certainly don't!) there's still the terrifying but utterly ordinary human stuff and the story is built up in such a way that I find it all too easy to see how the characters could be motivated to do some of the utterly frightening things they do in this series.  The evil done in the story isn't the evil of supervillians, but the very real and ordinary evils committed by frightened and desperate people.  That's true even of the very strange space aliens in the story, really.

I also notice that whenever I read books now, regardless of whether I love them or hate them, it nearly always spurs me to think of things I want to write myself.
