Shame is Not a Moral Framework
Jan. 20th, 2024 12:21 pmThe reason I have issues with shaming people is because I think it's more effective to promote a robust moral framework if you want people to consistently do the right thing. It is too easy for people motivated by shame to do the wrong thing but in a way that makes it look like they are doing the right thing simply so the shaming will stop, or even if they genuinely want to do the right thing to confuse that with whatever actions make the shaming stop (and thus their sense of morality is only based around how their actions look to others and around the loudest and most influential voices around them, which are subject to change at all times).
However, it is also important to consider the best way to advance arguments against shaming. Because if you are against shaming people, you should also be against shaming people who shame people for the same reasons.
