Debunking...Seems a Bit Much

I've come to dislike the word 'debunking' because it has the same connotation to me as when someone says they've 'crushed' their opponents argument.  I personally prefer 'refute' to 'debunk' because I feel that it has a more neutral connotation and denotation.  Also I just looked up both words and I definitely still feel this way, even if neither meant quite exactly what I thought they did.
