People of Color
Nov. 23rd, 2019 10:19 pmI wish there was a better term than 'people of color' to describe people who are affected by racism. I have never cared for that term and believe there are a number of reasons it's less than ideal, but sometimes you just need to talk about the entire category of people who are affected by racism and not particular subgroups who are in that category.
I also refuse to use 'non-white' for that and generally consider non-negational terms better as a way of describing people when there are *any* available to choose from (though I can think of other cases where a negational term is the only one in common usage, and I don't currently have a position on whether things should change for those cases or whether there are reasons inherent to those specific cases for why negational term use is different). I also do understand and agree with the idea that general terms shouldn't be used when a more specific term is more accurate, but it is also my position that when people discuss more general ideas like racism, a more specific term is not necessarily more accurate, and I feel there needs to be better ways to talk about these things.
