Walking

I've learned a lot more about my local environment in the past year or so.  I go for walks fairly often and observe all the different plants, animals, and fungi I see.  I've been really into nature for more than a decade now, but I've been a lot more observant of the bits of it right next to me of late, and I feel like I've learned quite a bit.  My mental map of my local area is certainly more detailed than it used to be, though, I think there's still plenty of places nearby I'm unfamiliar with.  Sometime maybe I'll actually try to draw out a map of what's nearby.  That could be interesting.  I've also considered how I might take more of an active role in local ecology.  I've certainly observed a lot more of what's going on locally of late, but there's much more I want to learn.

I've learned so much from other people.  I mean, most the things I know are naturally a direct or indirect result of other people.  Anything I've ever learned through reading books and such was learned from some other person, but I think there's something to be said for directly interacting with other people.  And I don't think there has to be any intention by anyone to teach for people to learn from such experiences.  I think both learning and teaching have the potential to be both active or passive processes, which I think is in conflict with the popular conception of learning and teaching as dichotomy between learning as a process of passive absorbtion vs teaching as a process of active effort.

I find it amusing to think about the fact that my rate of posting on Tumblr would probably have been considered sluggish by many compared to the norm of that site, whereas on here it seems like I'm a, um, pretty active poster in comparison with the norm.  This is probably because I have few standards with regards to minimum quality for my posts.

I've been on Dreamwidth for nearly three years now.  Wow, time really does go by fast.
