Maybe it's because I'm extremely comfortable with AU's, but I've never written something and then felt like later canon 'invalidated' it. When I write my stories, I'm doing my own thing, so the direction canon decides to go doesn't matter to me. I don't mind incorporating new canon if I feel like I can get it to mesh with what I want to do, but if not, it's no big deal. I definitely use canon, but I use it selectively and with some thought to what I want my specific story to be. I've seen a lot of things that were pretty clearly AUs to me, but the author seemed to feel like canon released after they wrote the work 'invalidated' it. And I guess it's up to them if they want to feel that way, but I've just never seen any reason for that.
