I think two descriptors that fit my approach to writing are spontaneous and deliberate.  I tend to continuously incorporate new ideas into my writing because I enjoy having a certain degree of flexibility.  This introduces challenges, but it keeps things interesting for me as well.  At the same time, whenever I add a new idea, I think a lot about how and why I want to incorporate that idea.  It's not random because I chose to add the idea -- there was something about it that I felt added to the direction I want to take my story.

There are other people who write best taking different approaches.  But this is what I feel works for me.
