A Sudden Realization

Do you ever just write a scene that starts out with a fairly direct extrapolation of character traits and then you read it over, nodding to yourself like 'yes, this is a completely straightforward characterization based on their known character traits' but then some completely unexpected extrapolation from that scene just jumps straight out of left field and hits you like a ton of bricks?  Like it's the same kind of feeling when you infer a big reveal by reading a part of the story that implies but does not directly state it, but it's your own story???
