My borage hasn't flowered, but it's gotten really big (several inches high). It's one of the most successful things I've grown from seed yet. All the seedlings except the mint (since I feel pretty confident the lone sprout in that pot is a sunflower and not mint) I planted earlier have sprouted. All that remains to be seen is how large they grow. My sprout mortality tends to be high. They're quite delicate at this stage, but I'm definitely interested in trying to get better at growing plants from seed.

I'm so excited because my arugula and borage have sprouted!

But also--none of my mint has sprouted yet. Now, maybe the mint just takes longer to sprout than my other plants. But last time I tried to grow mint was a resounding failure. It never sprouted. So if that happens again this time I'm going to be annoyed.

Mint is supposedly easy to grow, but if I only ever tried to grow mint I'd think I had a brown thumb. But I grow plenty of other things just fine.

Maya Forest Gardeners: Build Food Sovereignty

“We grew our food. We always had food to eat when times got difficult in Belize.”

– Estella, a Maya forest gardener

Over time, the Maya people have left their fields for jobs in a capitalist economy that has the nature to exploit labor and income. Dependency on a capitalist system manipulates income since people are at the mercy of an unstable market as COVID-19 has displayed.  The Maya detached from their land and the reciprocal relationship they had with the planet for unstable forms of income.

Maya forest gardeners enhance the health and quality of life in their communities. They increase local access to healthy, nutritious food options that build strong community food security and sovereignty.

Milpa fields and home gardens can be a vital source of nutrition, medicine, and food security in times of food scarcity or other unstable economic troubles. For example, the COVID-19 pandemic caused supply chain interruptions and lockdowns preventing people from securing food. Maya forest gardeners remained unaffected as their milpa fields provided a steady food supply.

Maya farming’s emphasis on polyculture acts as a safeguard against low yields and market demand changes. If one crop fails, another one can substitute. The same principle applies when factors like a surplus cause a sudden drop in one crop’s market value.

The first thing I've seen flower in my patio garden is not my echidnacea, not my chamomile, nor my sunflower.

It's the daikon radish end I planted.

Since I love mushrooms so much, I should research how to grow them.  Maybe I could start an indoor mushroom farm in my apartment?  Oyster mushrooms are the kind I'd most like to grow, but I also like portobello mushrooms, the white button mushrooms, and a lot of other types of mushrooms as well.  One of the few types of mushrooms I've had I'm not really that into is shiitake, though even those I think make a good accompaniment to ramen and certain other dishes.

Bok Choy!

Really not a fan of dealing with this post-apocalyptic wasteland we all live in but in better news I saved the end of a bok choy and put it in some water in a glass jar and now it is growing!  Yes, I am very excited about this.  Don't know how big it will get but it took less than a day of sitting in my window for the tiny yellow leaves growing out of the end to turn bright green so that was pretty cool.

Sunflowers

Sunflowers are really dramatic when they sprout.  One day they just will burst forth from the soil.

I did a bit of gardening earlier today, but more significantly, I did a lot of gardening last night and planted some more stuff.  Some of my earlier stuff didn't do very well (such as my unfortunate chamomile and lettuces) so I replanted or planted something else in its place, and I also set up some more pots with stuff like chives and scallions and mini-sunflowers.  At this point I'm just trying to see what I can manage to grow on my patio.

A bit of basil in my other new pot sprouted and my other cilantro pot sprouted.  Very excited!  Also, my *other* basil pot, the first one I planted, is finally getting more sprouts!  For a long time it just had this one tiny sprout and so I was kind of wondering if I was just incapable of growing basil properly from seed.  Which would be tragic, because I love fresh basil.  However, things seem to be coming along nicely now.  I don't know what the deal is with my first basil pot, but my new basil is actually taller than the basil in the first pot I planted.

So, yeah, I planted three pots of basil because I love fresh basil and it's finally starting to really get growing.  Here's hoping I eventually get some full sized basil plants from this!

Went to an arboretum and walked around there for a while.  Very relaxing.  Also earlier today a number of my chamomile seeds sprouted, so I'm hoping to eventually get some chamomile in my patio garden.  Was very excited to finally see some of my new seeds actually sprout!  Was beginning to wonder if anything was going to sprout in my new pots.

I woke up really early today so I went out and worked in my tiny patio garden.  I have some sprouts coming up right now.  I want to be more active in maintaining my garden.  It would be nice to be able to grow more fresh herbs and vegetables and maybe even some sort of fruit.  Right now only a few of the things I'm growing seem to be doing okay.  I worked on trying to fix up my garden configuration though to see if maybe the problem with some of the other things was sunlight.  Need to get a few more things before I can expand my garden though.

Update:  I just went out to check on the status of my garden and some more sprouts are coming up!  It's in one of the pots I moved, so maybe the extra sunlight helped.

Last night I planted some seeds in my tiny patio garden.  I really want to get better at gardening because I love having fresh herbs and greens and things.  The apartment I live in now poses some particular challenges re: sunlight, but I've been trying to work on my garden design to mitigate that issue as much as I can.
