Thoughts on Humility
Sep. 1st, 2019 09:35 pm I think I disagree with a lot of people's understanding of humility as subservience or lack of self-confidence. I think it's as important to avoid the insecurity of never trusting one's own judgment as much as it's important to avoid the overconfidence of assuming one is always right or understands those who disagree with them. Even when we know someone is wrong, that doesn't mean we know why they are wrong. And sometimes that can make all the difference. Humility to me is doing the utmost to prevent falling prey to either fallacy. This doesn't require us to debate anyone we don't feel like engaging with, but it does require us to see other humans as equals, capable of both enormous error and extensive insight, and that if we are capable of discerning truth at all, none of us understands it fully, but only in bits and pieces.
