So perhaps unsurprisingly I've been thinking about TROS a lot and Palpatine's appearance in the film. And I was thinking about how he comes back to life in the film, and how that might relate to...Darth Plagueis.
As we know, in Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine tells Anakin the story of Darth Plagueis, telling him that the Sith Lord could create life and, even more importantly to Anakin, 'save the ones he cared about from dying'. He also states that it's ironic that Plagueis could save others from death, but not himself.
And this got me thinking, what if Palpatine thought it was ironic not only because Plagueis could help others in a way he could not help himself, but also because Palpatine had figured out a way to prevent himself from dying? And so he comes back in the flesh, in his original body, because he utilized this particular ability to save himself from death. This could also explain why he took so long to come back--maybe however it works to bring someone back to life takes considerable time.
Anyway, I have no idea if they will use this particular explanation in the movie, but I think it could be a pretty cool callback to ROTS if they did.
