Rey Casting

Apparently there's been some speculation that Maisie Richardson-Sellers, who played a minor role in The Force Awakens, was originally considered for the role of Rey, probably based on articles like this one:

I would have liked to see her take on the character!

One of the things that was crucial to my enjoyment of the bits of this film that meant anything to me was basically not being invested with what the movie decided to do with Kylo Ren.  I want to distill my thoughts on his arc now, though, as he's one of the few characters to actually have any sort of arc in this film (which has so many loose threads at its end).

One thing about The Rise Of Skywalker was that I found it difficult to pay attention to what was going on at times.  I don't know if the movie was just moving too fast in those spots or what, but I would be watching a scene, then start thinking about it, then realize I'd missed a part because the characters had moved somewhere else or the scene had switched to different characters.  Since I don't want to give Disney more money for this movie I'm going to wait until I can watch it at home from a secondhand DVD or something so I can actually pause and rewind the thing.  That might be the only way my brain can keep track of what's going on.

I for one was entirely on board when it turned out the giant Force-sensitive Porg was the Skywalker referred to by the title.  It makes perfect sense to me that the shared surname was mere coincidence.  Of course Skywalker would be a common surname among Porgs.

Well, I enjoyed this film!  I was pretty much right about a lot of the areas where it didn't deliver, though.  One just has to go through the film with the acceptance of "well I guess this is happening now".  While I didn't try to avoid all spoilers, I wasn't really interested in knowing the whole film plot before I saw it, either.

I imagine Finn's line in the new trailer about the Force bringing them together also ties back to TFA, which is nice.  Maybe they'll talk a little more about what was going on there, but even if they don't, at least there's some acknowledgment that the title The Force Awakens isn't just about Rey?  Don't get me wrong, I think she's a super fun character, but it's nice to get more acknowledgment of the importance other characters who may not be Force users, or if they are, haven't yet demonstrated any of the more overt Force abilities.

Like I think this is saying that yes, the Force awakened in Rey, but also that it 'awakened' in a larger sense, and that Finn and the other characters are part of that awakening.

So perhaps unsurprisingly I've been thinking about TROS a lot and Palpatine's appearance in the film.  And I was thinking about how he comes back to life in the film, and how that might relate to...Darth Plagueis.
Rest under a cut for speculation containing possible TROS spoilers... )

Yeah, so I've been watching this on repeat haha.

I am so excited for this movie!

This is definitely my favorite of the three trailers, though I loved the other two as well.

There's Finn, Rey, Poe, and Rose (finally there is Rose!).  There's even more cool scenery.

That spiky throne is incredible decor.

Fuzzy tusk horses!  Fuzzy tusk horses!

The voiceovers are what really make this trailer, though.  Palpatine's lines are absolutely chilling, but also hearing Luke again and, for the first time in a TROS trailer, Leia.

Sad about Carrie Fisher, but I do also want to see her last scenes here.

The music in this trailer is excellent and I'm hoping that the final movie also has this level of musical quality throughout.

Not gonna lie that Threepio scene almost made me cry.

So who's seen the second Star Wars trailer for The Rise of Skywalker?  The first part's all old stuff but then they do finally show new scenes for the movie.

I have some wild theorizing below, so if you prefer to avoid any and all theories in case they might be true, you might want to avoid it. They're just whatever stuff my brain comes up with though, so unlikely to be true. I also discuss some details of the trailer, so there's trailer spoilers too.

Thoughts on the Trailer... )

I feel like I need to take this very special time between the first trailer release and the film's theatre release to to come up with increasingly implausible theories for what Palpatine will be up to in Ep IX.   So here's a few:

*Takes up scuba diving
*Possesses BB-8.  Is finally defeated by that small green and white robot we see in the trailer.
*permanently retired
*Just there to be the laugh track

So if the Yoda Ghost is still hanging around in the sequel trilogy, and Palpatine's going to come back (me chanting 'tacky clones tacky clones...'), and Force users can access the Force as Force ghosts, maybe we can get a Palpatine ghost and Yoda ghost Force duel.  Like they're all just throwing lightning around.

Force ghost duel! Force ghost duel!

Holocrons

So since the sequel trilogy darksiders aren't Sith, I got to thinking about their aesthetic, and what kind of holocrons they would have.  And I thought, well, maybe they'd want a different shape from the Sith, so not pyramidal.  And the Jedi took cubes already.  And so I thought--what about spheres?  That would be fun, right?  Holocron doubles as a sports ball when the Knights of Ren are on break.

My petty nit-picky pet peeve is people calling Snoke and Kylo Ren Sith.  I mean, it's not a huge deal to me, especially since many people do this just as a convenient way to refer to them for villain montages and whatnot.  And I know it's not something that would necessarily be easy to pick up on, especially if someone's only seen the movies, even if it's it's hinted at even within the movies.  But it does occasionally bug me, especially when people do this when they themselves are nitpicking canon or fandom in some other respect.

The biggest visual hint in the movies is their eyes.  The Sith have yellow or yellow-red eyes.  But neither Snoke nor Kylo do.  The differences go beyond that, though.  Snoke and Kylo discuss the Light side in terms of it being something that tempts them, in terms of it being something to resist, whereas the Sith simply don't seem to view the Light Side as having such an appeal.  Quite the contrary, they seem to view such an appeal as being an integral part of the Dark Side.  Also, while we don't yet know much about the Knights of Ren, they seem to be somewhat differently viewed than Force-wielding servants of the Sith like the Inquisitors.

I dunno, I just wish there was more discussion of the differences between these two Dark Side groups in fandom rather than just lumping the sequels darksiders in with the Sith.

After Episode IX of Star Wars comes out I do wonder if we'll get more prequel/sequel novels devoted to that era.  While I could understand not having anything at this point that talks about what comes after that period, I don't know why they don't have more material that gives us background into what comes before.  I understand some of it could contain spoilers for IX but I'm sure there's more that could be said that wouldn't spoil anything important but could hint at more of the events that bridge VI and VII.  I mean, I haven't read all the books, but from what I know, most of the major events leading up to the sequels remain largely unexplained or detailed.

I also don't know why the argument that the OT didn't have background when it came out is supposed to be a reason why the sequel trilogy wouldn't.  The OT were the first movies.  The sequels come after six movies.  When a piece of a story is released after another piece of a story, it makes sense to connect it to the other piece.

I have lots of criticisms of the prequels for example, but they are very much connected to the original trilogy.  The plot reintroduces major characters from the OT and answers questions like 'what were the Clone Wars and who was being cloned', 'how did Anakin become Darth Vader', 'how did Palpatine become Emperor', and 'how did the Republic and Jedi Order fall'.  And none of those answers even requires diving into ancillary material to discover.  It's all laid out by the movies themselves.

I mean, maybe we'll get all the answers in IX, but that seems unlikely.  I feel like we'll get one or two at most. And I think part of the difficulty is that the OT was designed to be really self contained, but that doesn't mean that more elements of the political situation from that time couldn't have been referenced to explain the situation in the sequels.  I just feel like something more could have been done, even without considerably changing the overall plot.  I guess I'll see how I feel after IX, but this just seems like a weird way to go about a sequel trilogy, is all.

Mostly I don't have to come up with things I would hate to happen in episode IX myself, though.  There are plenty of pet theories fans are putting forth as the ideal way to end the series that I would absolutely hate if they were actually implemented.  In fact, I've probably seen more fan theories I hated than ones I liked.  So I can be like, sure, maybe that will happen, maybe they'll choose to ruin the movie that way.

I'm preparing my low expectations to avoid being disappointed with episode IX.  I need to come up with something suitably ridiculous to imagine. Eg:

The entirety of IX is just a close-up of the thala-siren sitting on the Ahch-To beach.  All of the trailer scenes and promotional photoshoots are cut for this.

Did I set my expectations low enough yet? Time will tell...

So I was trying to get more details about Palpatine in TROS, and I found some very illuminating information in here:

https://youtu.be/-hXg9VcN48c

It was very important to me to track down actual video of this because I've seen fans have conflicting interpretations about what has been said.  Additionally, Ian McDiarmid revealed almost nothing about his role in the new film in the interview I've seen of him for it.  But though McDiarmid  is not interviewed in this one, this video looks like the most solid confirmation that Palpatine plays some important role in the film.  He's mentioned by Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and John Boyega.  One part that I thought was particularly of interest--Abrams talks briefly about working with Ian McDiarmid, which does I think tell us a little bit about what ways Palpatine might appear in this film.
unspeakablehorror: (Default)
I'm still like, not entirely certain what angle the IX movie will take with Palpatine.  While it's been heavily implied by the higher-ups in Lucasfilm that he'll return in this movie, there's a lot of ways one could potentially interpret that.  They wouldn't have to literally bring him back to life (or even as a Force Ghost) to be telling the truth about that.  Could still mean something else, like an extended flashback of some sort.  Then again, maybe he's just been taking an extended vacation somewhere this entire time.  Or maybe we'll get tacky Palpatine clones (I am ready!).
