Eight Facts About Mountain Goats You Should Know

Mountain goats are actually not goats.

Mountain goats are not in the same genus as goats. In the bovidae family, mountain goats are associated with antelopes, gazelles and cattle.

 Fast Facts

Size
Up to 385 pounds.                            

Distribution
Throughout Southeast Alaska, along coastal mountains and into Southcentral.                            

Diet
Sedges, forbs, low-growing shrubs, blueberries, hemlock, and lichen.                            

Predators
Wolves, bears.                            

Reproduction
Single kid is most common; twinning is rare.                            

Remarks
Mountain goats are sure-footed climbers and have specially adapted hooves for climbing in rough, slippery terrain. Mountain goats are among the most charismatic species and inhabit one of the most spectacular landscapes on earth.

I feel like I ran across a Tumblr post where someone mentioned that first fact (or the person had run across it elsewhere) and then someone said "well I knew that The Mountain Goats (band) weren't goats" 😆

(also it might be worth noting, even taking Wikipedia with a grain of salt, that mountain goats aren't peculiar to Alaska, but the detailed source here is Alaska-specific which is probably why it offers an Alaska-centric range)
