I wish I was better at languages, but regardless, I enjoy learning things about them. I love learning new language facts.

我听不懂

I don't understand

Literally, this phrase means 'I hear, but I do not understand'

A useful phrase for people who don't (or don't yet) speak the language .

However, there are some nuances that are useful to learn if you do want to communicate in Mandarin, as this phrase also implies a desire to completely end a conversation (as well as primaily applying to speech). This article discusses some useful variations on this phrase :

I really want to get better at both my Spanish and Mandarin. I think I just need to study them both.

I just need to accept that I am determined to be trilingual.

Little linguistic detail that English, Spanish, and Mandarin all share in common: they all have unigender first and second person pronouns.  I recall a while back that I learned that isn't true of all languages.

It should be super easy to learn languages on the internet, but it doesn't seem people are any more likely to be multilingual today than they were before the advent of the internet. I don't know if this is just a perception I have or if it's true for people in general. It has unfortunately been true for me.

So I'm still learning Mandarin and Spanish (and Japanese and French and feel free to throw some other languages at me if you want haha), and I thought I would share some very important vocabulary:

天行者崛起 - (tian1xing2zhe3jue2qi3) The Rise of Skywalker

天行者 - Skywalker
崛起 - Rise

星球大战 (xing1qui2 daz4han4) Star Wars

La guerra de las galaxias - Star Wars (literal translation is actually The War of the Galaxies)

la espada láser - lightsaber (literal translation is 'the sword laser', basically 'laser sword')
Because some dictionaries have the important words:

El ascenso de Skywalker - The Rise of Skywalker

I looked up how Darth Maul is referred to in the Spanish and Mandarin Chinese versions of Star Wars.

Spanish: Darth Mutilar
Mandarin: 达斯魔 (da2si1 mo2)

Well, I guess my brain is doing languages now!  I've been trying to practice my Spanish more lately so I can hopefully someday achieve my dream of becoming fluent in the language, and I'm also trying to be ambitious and learn a new and very different language--Mandarin Chinese!  And maybe I'll learn a little bit of some other languages on the side.  I think linguistics is a really cool field and I'd love to learn more about that too while I'm also trying to learn how to write and speak these languages.

Hola and 你好!

If I knew more languages I could finally find out what some of these fanfics on AO3 are about...
