Post-COVID-19 Condition (Long Covid)

Symptoms

While common symptoms of long COVID can include fatigue, shortness of breath and cognitive dysfunction over 200 different symptoms have been reported that can have an impact on everyday functioning.

Numbers affected

Studies show that around 10–20% of people infected by SARS-CoV-2 may go on to develop symptoms that can be diagnosed as long COVID. Although exact numbers of those living with the condition are uncertain, it is believed that more than 17 million people across the WHO European Region may have experienced it during the first two years of the pandemic (2020/21).

Protecting yourself and others from long COVID

Protection from long COVID means protecting yourself and others from COVID-19 infection in the first place. WHO recommends a number of simple, proven measures to help do this:

  • Taking up offers of COVID-19 vaccines/boosters
  • Wearing well-fitted masks
  • cleaning hands regularly
  • catching coughs and sneezes
  • ensuring indoor spaces are well ventilated.

Yeah, how about there is no 'going back to normal' for this.  There's adaptation, there's finding joy despite the things we've lost, but just pretending long Covid doesn't exist isn't going to make it go away.

I wish more people wore masks on public transit. :(

I wish more people wore masks in general.  I wish more people wore masks correctly.  I guess it's going to be another year of not going to any indoor public spaces except out of absolute necessity, but with the added bonus of also listening to 'the pandemic is over' over and over.

ramble-tags: on the plus side, I can wear n95 + faceshield these days, instead of just depending on the cloth masks, which I only use outdoors now, worried about my surgery since I won't be able to have as much protection then, but at least the medical places I've been to so far seem to put more of an emphasis on masking, so hopefully the hospital will be taking adequate precautions for that too

FDA Authorizes Covid Booster Shots That Target Omicron BA.5 Variant

Pfizer and Moderna were originally developing boosters to target omicron BA.1, the variant that caused the massive wave of infection last winter. But the FDA told the vaccine makers in late June to switch gears and target BA.4 and BA.5 instead as those variants quickly gained ground. The sudden change in plans left little time for clinical trials in humans before a fall rollout.

As a consequence, the authorization is based on human clinical trials from the BA.1 shots, which produced a better immune response than the original doses, according to the FDA. But it’s unclear how the BA.5 boosters will perform in humans since the data is based on BA.1.

While I have no hesitation about getting this vaccine myself, I do think the lack of data for additional benefits over the original vaccine means we shouldn't assume that the BA.5 vaccine will have some specific additional benefit over the original or the BA.1 vaccines, which both have human data.  I entirely understand the reasoning behind this, but if they're going to compare this to the flu vaccine (which we still have more data for making variants for), they should be upfront about how the effectiveness for that vaccine can vary widely from year to year.  To be clear, this vaccine will not be less effective than the prior one, but because there is no human data yet, we cannot say it will be more effective than the original vaccine or the BA.1 vaccine either.  That is just a guess.  It's a reasonable guess, but very much a guess nonetheless.

The vaccines greatly reduce the chance of dying, hospitalization, and other bad outcomes.  But none of the vaccines, even the omicron BA.1 booster being used in other countries for which we do have human data, guarantee protection, and especially they do not guarantee protection against any particular outcome from covid.  Masking is still vital to reducing transmission for everyone, but especially to vulnerable populations, and for reducing long covid, as is avoiding public spaces as much as possible (and avoiding or masking up when around anyone who lives with you as much as is practical for your situation).

How, where and when to get updated Covid booster shots

Here's some info on the new omicron boosters being rolled out in the US this month.  I'm planning to get mine as soon as I can.

I don't think masking is overall as necessary outdoors unless someone thinks it's likely they'll be in a large crowd, but for various reasons I don't go outdoors without masking up.  I joke about being neurotic but there are also practical considerations in my case that I think make it more important than it might be for the average person.

But in general, being outdoors considerably lowers transmission risk for airborne diseases like covid.  This is because virus particles have much more air to disperse through and it's generally much easier to physically distance yourself from other people. I'm also fully vaccinated and have had a booster shot, but my understanding is that even that doesn't prevent people from getting covid or getting long covid, it just reduces the likelihood of severe adverse effects like hospitalization and death.  So I still take full precautions, both because I don't want to catch covid and inadvertently pass it to someone else and because I'm worried about the possibility of adverse effects even with the vaccine (especially long covid which doesn't yet seem to be well understood).

How do you bring aid to a disaster-struck nation when you don’t want to let any outsiders in?

That’s the pandemic dilemma faced by Tonga following the eruption of a massive underwater volcano on Jan. 15. International aid is on the way, but efforts are hamstrung by the desire to keep the coronavirus out of the remote Pacific island nation, which consists of some 170 islands, many uninhabited, and has a population of about 100,000.

Had a dream where I kept forgetting to wear my facemask and I was going into movie theatres and libraries.  Whatever part of my subconscious constructed that dream was treating it like one of those dreams where one forgets to wear clothes, even though my dream self had the expected anxieties about catching covid.

Anyway, I haven't even been inside a movie theatre or library since March of 2020 since I don't even go inside grocery stores anymore.  So this was one of those dreams where I wake up and feel that relief of 'oh, I never actually did that'.

Still wishing for the day I can wake up from one of these kinds of things and go 'oh, we're not in a world-wide pandemic for covid anymore', though.  Not sure when that'll happen, since people seem to have this attitude that's it's over just because vaccines exist, even though the most effective vaccines are largely only available to rich countries (who still themselves have huge unvaccinated populations) and the more unvaccinated people there are, the more ability the virus has to mutate into something worse (which has already happened at least once!).

Anyway, as nightmares go, this dream certainly wasn't my worst. I get a little chuckle over my subconscious setting it up like one of those 'embarrassing lack of clothing' dreams.  Really didn't even come close to outdoing the reality of the situation.

Personally, I've continued to take the maximal possible precautions for covid-19 that I'm capable of despite being fully vaccinated.  In particular, this means I typically double mask and wear a face shield whenever I leave my home as well as employ physical distancing from other people, and avoid all unnecessary trips inside public buildings and transit.  The last is especially important as lack of adequate ventilation is one of the biggest risk factors for covid-19, and it's one that's largely outside of my control as an individual.

I get all my necessities delivered or mailed to me (though I avoid those services that deliver from restaurants and grocery stores due to how much they exploit their workers and how expensive they are).  I rely primarily on produce and pantry foods now as a result, though I can get the occassional refrigerated good ice-packed and delivered to me. I check out ebooks from the library.  While I go out regularly now, it's only to outdoor spaces like parks.

I don't really even miss things like eating in restaurants anymore, though I wouldn't be opposed to if I felt it was safe again.  Though I have no idea when I'll think it's safe again.  I'm glad I have the added protection of being fully vaccinated, but given that one or more vaccines are known to be slightly less effective at preventing people from catching the Delta variant of covid-19 and we don't yet know how long immunity from the vaccine lasts even for the original version of the virus, I don't think it's a bad idea to be cautious.  I'd rather be overly cautious than not cautious enough.

I've noticed that if I wear a mask and face shield while chopping onions, it prevents the tears my eyes involuntarily generate from chopping the onions.  Also, in my experience, the combination of the mask and face shield is more effective than the mask alone.  My theory for this is that the mask both helps to block some particles from getting into the eyes but also prevents them from getting into the nasal passages, which maybe also helps contribute to the irritation response.  It's kind of surprising, though, since I wouldn't expect a regular face shield like mine to block out so much of the onion chemical since it's not closed off on the bottom or sides.  I'm also surprised the mask makes a difference at all (because I have noticed that just the face shield alone doesn't block the crying response as strongly).  I gave my theory for why, but I don't know if that's the real reason or not--it's just my best guess.  Sometime I want to investigate this matter more.  Anyway, just thought I'd pass this along in case it can be useful to anyone else.

I imagine goggles would do the job even better, but I think after this pandemic more people might have spare masks and faceshields lying around than goggles.

Face Masks

Had a dream that referenced covid-19 last night.  Apparently I was going to a made up college, too, though.  I guess it's not too surprising that my dream would mix past and present time periods of my life.  While it was a nightmare, it was more of a situational one than one where anything explicitly frightening happened in the dream itself, so I've definitely had worse.  The dream made up an apartment for me to live in because apparently my subconscious likes architecture, and even an entire fake town.

The nightmare part was being outside without any mask and to a lesser extent, the fact that I was in college in the fist place, but since this dream didn't really get to addressing actual college obligations that part wasn't as much of an issue as the covid part.

I remember I eventually did get to my apartment in my dream at least, though I kept encountering people who wanted to get way too close to me and talk to me.  I kept having to back away from people.

Like the not having a mask part was unpleasant but when I woke up I was like "but some people actually have had to go to college during this time, and that's a lot scarier than just having a dream about that happening" so I think the nightmare aspect was undercut considerably by that.  Plus when waking up I was just like "well I guess I'm not going to get covid from imaginary dream people" so while I'm still worried about that in real life, the events of the dream just seem like one less thing I have to worry about for that.

This 'you forgot your mask' nightmare reminds me a lot of similar nightmares about me continuously forgetting things.  I think that's a thread in many of my nightmares even though it's not reflective of how often I forget things in real life.  It probably is reflective of how much I worry about forgetting things, though.

So far over 520,000 people have died from covid in the US. I get so upset reading about how slow the vaccine rollout is, and how wasteful it's been.  I also wonder how long the vaccines will confer protection?  Obviously there's been no long-term tests of their effectiveness yet, and due to pharmaceutical companies being absolutely evil, there's had to be a whole bunch of different ones developed, with varying testing and effectiveness rates.  It sounds like most of them are quite good at preventing the people who get them from dying of covid, so that's promising, but there's just so many variables and unknowns and I don't like it.  I hope the more optimistic estimates for these things are right, but unfortunately my pessimism has been right about too many things to assume they are.  It's also terrible that countries like the US and corporations like Pfizer keep trying to prevent other countries from getting the vaccine or trying to strong-arm them to do what they say in order to get access to it.
unspeakablehorror: (Default)
I think less about 'when this pandemic will be over' and more 'how I can figure out how to best adapt to this situation' because I don't have a huge amount of confidence in the response of the US (or much of the rest of the world either) to the pandemic but I need to figure out what I can do to best deal with all this nonsense.  I'm getting better figuring out exercise, but there are also...other problems I need to deal with beyond that.

I Want Out

I think the stuck inside aspect of self-quarantining is really starting to get to me.  I was really used to being outside a lot, but it's also easier for me to get myself to do something like go outside if it's to accomplish a task.  But I try to avoid going out these days for tasks if at all possible.  Also I always feel apprehension if I go outside without a mask these days even though my understanding is that outside is much lower risk than indoors.  Part of it is that it is sometimes hard for me to avoid people given the terrain in certain areas near where I live.  Like even when I go outdoors these days I feel so restricted and confined.  Also anxious.

The good news is I've been slowly adapting to getting more exercise indoors, so hopefully that will continue to improve so my muscles don't completely atrophy haha.

Given the covid-19 crisis, I thought I'd give some ideas for getting groceries while avoiding entering the store.  One alternative to going to the store to get produce is getting a Commnity Shared Agriculture (CSA) box pre-prepared for you instead.  Just a note: often there is a pickup location and time so this may not be workable for everyone, especially if you can't get your box delivered to you or your workplace directly--options will differ depending on the CSA chosen.  Cost and produce available will also depend on the CSA chosen.  You can find out more about CSA's as well as find out what local CSA's are available by clicking the 'find a local CSA' button here: https://www.localharvest.org/csa/  (though I'm not sure how extensive their database is or whether it is US only or more international).

CSA's are not the only option for getting a produce box, but they're a good way to buy produce locally and have more awareness of where your food is coming from.  They also sometimes have additional grocery items beyond produce available.

Bidet

Just thought I'd mention that I bought a portable bidet to help me stretch out my toilet paper, and not only has it been useful for that, but also I honestly don't know how I went most of my life without one of these.

Specifically, I'm talking about something like this:
https://www.brondell.com/easyspa-travel-bidet/
There are many other brands that sell these, too.  They're very cheap (often, like the example shown, under $20), can reduce toilet paper usage considerably, and clean way better than using toilet paper alone.
