I sometimes feel that when people talk about 'complex' villains, what they mean is villains who are less evil, or more morally grey.  And while I do find  a number of morally grey villains to be complex, I would say it's not their moral greyness that creates their complexity. Complex villains *can* be morally grey, but they can also be unrelentingly evil.

What makes a villain complex to me, then? A history that informs their present day behaviors and attitudes.  Specific goals and motivations that exist that inform what specific actions they take.  For example, I'd say neither Plagueis nor Palpatine are especially morally grey characters as depicted within the Darth Plagueis novel.  But I would say that the novel adds quite a bit of complexity to both of these characters.  We learn their history, their preoccupations, and their underlying motivations.  And all of this increases their complexity as characters.  They're also quite distinct from each other in their personality and approach to accomplishing their goals.  The prequels also increase Palpatine's complexity as a character, which they do by showing his indirect approach to seizing power, not by making him a good character...who was wronged...by a gangster woman (no, I will never get over this Star Wars Underworld plot proposal).

What I'm saying is, regardless of how evil a villain is, they can still be a complex character.  And regardless of how morally grey they are, they can still be a very simple character.  Moral greyness is not tied to character complexity.  To make a character morally grey, the author just has to make them be less evil, much like to make a very evil villain one just has to make them do more evil things.  But to make a character complex, they have to create detail and specificity for the character.

I think the reason I like villains so much is because I think mainstream media pushes some rather questionable ideals like ambition being bad and wrong, disrupting the status quo as the ultimate evil (how many story plots end with the hero triumphantly restoring things to ‘how they used to be’ before the evil villain came around), having to forgive people if you don’t want to be an evil or broken person, etc. etc. ad nauseum. And I mean, I understand where all the above is coming from, but I disagree on a fundamental level with all of it. So often I have to overcome my dislike of these ideals being pushed on the hero to actually like them. Ahsoka is a rare departure from this since she breaks with at least one of the major values listed above (ie. restoring things to the status quo, since she actively chooses to leave the Jedi Order, and is never depicted as being bad or wrong for doing so).

Of course, the other thing I enjoy about villains is that they can be quite petty, and I find that very–relateable.

Tags: villains, meta, that last one is really important, like beyond all my silly moralizing, sometimes it's just about enjoying the flagrant pettiness, star wars mention, ahsoka mention,

Because Lord Terrin is extremely antagonistic towards two of my favorite characters in Ascent (Ghirahim and Link), some might tend to assume that I as the author find him unlikeable, but nothing could be further from the truth.

I'm a villains person. I love antagonists. The only time I don't like a character is if I personally find them boring or flat or viscerally unpleasant in some way. But for the most part, I don't design OC's like that. My OC's are designed to tick off as many of my self-indulgences as possible, especially those OC's with an important role in the story. As one of the few characters in Ascent who survived the first war, Terrin has a pivotal role to play in the story, and he will also have a major part in my upcoming Ancient Cistern arc.

And he's one of my favorite characters to write.
